Sea Otters Need to Stay Warm

Staying warm is especially challenging for sea otters because of their small size. Marine mammals can increase their metabolism in the cold, but it has not been clear which organs or tissues they use to do this. A research team used muscle samples and put them in small chambers designed to monitor oxygen consumption. They can then measure how much energy is used. Click here to learn more.
