Humpback Found on Masonboro Island

mmrtcanes

A large whale identified as a young humpback whale washed up on the shore of a beach on Masonboro Island this past month. The whale was already deceased by the time anyone reported it and had bite marks on it likely from sharks. The cause of death is unknown, but officials warn locals and beach goers that the whale carcass may attract sharks and other predators. Taking home any part of the carcass is illegal as all marine mammals, dead or alive, are protected by NOAA. Click here to learn more.
