WWF-Australia and NGO have been able to ban gillnet fishing across 100,000 square feet across the great barrier reef in Australia. In 2017 they noticed that their highly endangered Dugong was being killed with these gill nets. They estimated around 422 Dugongs actually died between 2006-2012, and because there are estimated to be less than 200 individuals remaining this was cause for concern. So the WWF-Australia turned around and bought and shelved a commercial gillnet fishing license to create this refuge. Click here to learn more.
